Designed and built in secret by Lockheed's Skunk Works division in just 88 days, the U-2 was built to do one thing: fly higher than anything the Soviet Union could shoot down. At 70,000 feet, pilots wear full pressure suits nearly identical to astronaut gear, because the air is too thin to sustain life without one.
The A-12 wasn't flown by the Air Force — its pilots were CIA officers, recruited quietly and sworn to a level of secrecy so total that many couldn't tell their own families what they did for a living. Developed and tested out of Area 51, the program's very existence generated hundreds of UFO reports from people who had no idea what they were looking at.

The Nighthawk's bizarre, angular shape — all flat facets instead of smooth curves — looks strange because it was designed by computer to scatter radar returns, using math from a 1960s paper by Soviet physicist Pyotr Ufimtsev that the U.S. found sitting, untranslated and unrestricted, in a technical library. Lockheed's engineers realized the Soviets themselves hadn't grasped its military potential.
The Hornet was designed to do the job of two separate aircraft, the F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair, letting the Navy simplify training and maintenance around a single airframe that could dogfight and drop bombs on the same mission. It's since become one of the most recognizable jets in naval aviation.
There's no fuselage, no tail and no vertical stabilizers on a B-2 — the entire aircraft is one seamless flying wing, shaped and coated to be nearly invisible to radar. It remains, dollar for dollar, the most expensive aircraft ever built.

Lockheed Martin has publicly confirmed it is developing an SR-71 successor capable of hypersonic speeds, without confirming a flying prototype exists. "Darkstar," the sleek hypersonic aircraft featured in Top Gun: Maverick, was built as a movie prop — but Lockheed's own advanced programs executives have said the film's design deliberately echoed real internal SR-72 concept work, blurring the line between marketing and genuine leaked concept art.
For decades, altitude was the best-kept secret in aviation. Nobody expected to see an aircraft at 70,000 feet, let alone one shaped like a black dart with no visible engine glow at dusk — so when the U-2, A-12 Oxcart and SR-71 Blackbird began flying test and operational routes over the American Southwest and beyond, air traffic controllers, airline pilots and ordinary civilians reported exactly what they saw: something fast, silent and completely unidentifiable.
The CIA has since confirmed, in its own declassified internal history of the U-2 and Oxcart programs, that these covert test flights accounted for more than half of all UFO reports filed with the Air Force's Project Blue Book between the mid-1950s and 1960s. The government wasn't hiding aliens — it was hiding aircraft, and the secrecy needed to protect those programs meant investigators often couldn't tell witnesses the truth even when they knew it.
