Lockheed's engineers realized the Soviets themselves hadn't grasped its military potential.

Why Spy Planes Caused Thousands of UFO Reports

For decades, altitude was the best-kept secret in aviation. Nobody expected to see an aircraft at 70,000 feet, let alone one shaped like a black dart with no visible engine glow at dusk — so when the U-2, A-12 Oxcart and SR-71 Blackbird began flying test and operational routes over the American Southwest and beyond, air traffic controllers, airline pilots and ordinary civilians reported exactly what they saw: something fast, silent and completely unidentifiable.

The CIA has since confirmed, in its own declassified internal history of the U-2 and Oxcart programs, that these covert test flights accounted for more than half of all UFO reports filed with the Air Force's Project Blue Book between the mid-1950s and 1960s. The government wasn't hiding aliens — it was hiding aircraft, and the secrecy needed to protect those programs meant investigators often couldn't tell witnesses the truth even when they knew it.
